Rather than a 12-speed blender or a new set of china, the prime minister’s personal gift to Prince William and Kate Middleton is something that is truly Canadian hiking gear.

The personal gift from Stephen Harper and his wife will be hiking gear selected by Laureen, said Nina Chiarelli, acting communications director in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Since Laureen has joined her husband on the campaign trail, Chiarelli said she has yet to pick out the gear.

The couple will present the gift to the British royal couple when they visit Canada later this summer for their first official royal tour.

“The outdoor equipment was chosen in the hope that the royal couple will be able to use it when they experience Canada’s natural splendour later this year,” Chiarelli said.

Taxpayers will pay for the Harpers’ personal gift since it is given “in his function as prime minister,” she said.
