NORDEGG, Alberta. Murray Fierheller, chair of the Alberta Hiking Association (AHA) made the following comments in response to the announcement of the proposed protection of the Bighorn Country as a series of Provincial Parks, Provincial Recreation Zones and Public Land Use Zones.
“The Alberta Hiking Association celebrates today’s proposal that the Bighorn Country will be formally designated as a mix of parks and recreation areas. Albertans love parks and today’s announcement will enhance recreation opportunities for all users of the Bighorn Country.”
“After 5 years of planning and public consultations, the proposed Bighorn Park formalizes a world class recreation and conservation area on the doorstep on Edmonton and Red Deer. This is like a new “Kananaskis” for central Alberta and a great day for all Albertans who hike, camp, hunt, fish and trail ride.”
“Our members and clubs love the Bighorn and its amazing hiking potential. We welcome the additional resources and enforcement that will come now this area is proposed as an official park and recreation area. Today’s announcement will improve recreation opportunities for all Albertans and be a huge economic boost to the gateway communities of Nordegg, Rocky Mountain House and Sundre as this wonderful area finally gets the attention and recognition it deserves.”
