A 107-km multi-use recreational trail is to be built from Jasper townsite to the Columbia Icefield. Although hints of a new trail were dropped to the media a couple of months ago, it was only at the end of June that Parks Canada announced its location. The cost of $66 million is for a paved pathway to connect non-motorized usershikers, cyclists, runners, inline skaters, snowshoers, and XC skiersto existing attractions, trails and accommodations. The exact route for the trail has not yet been finalized but Parks Canada expects the Icefields Trail to be completed by March 2019 after following Parks Canada’s protocols and standards for ecological protection.
