Concerns for hikers about Plan for Parks

2008-11-25

There is concern among many hikers on some aspects of the Alberta Government’s proposals for our provincial parks and protected areas.

The prospect of opening provincial parks to limited use by Off Trail Vehicles is seen as the thin edge of the wedge in response to the demands of the fast-growing popularity in motorized recreation. Direct destruction of ground surface and natural vegetation, contamination of waterways and consequential threat to aquatic life, longterm erosion and disturbance of wildlife through noise and invasive rapid movement are obviously detrimental to the ecological landscape of our heritage lands.

The revised and second draft of its Parks Planning Framework edges back from the threat that recreational activity might be nibbling at the prime Parks mandate of ecological preservation, but the perception remains that adverse forces are at work to disturb the balance.
